Outline

Welcome

Optimizely Analytics includes a powerful Alerting with Rules feature that helps you proactively monitor your data andrespond to meaningful changes in real time. Whether you want to track critical issues, user behavior anomalies, or custom thresholds, rules let you define the exact conditions that should trigger alerts and guide action.

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • Understand how alert rules work and how to configure them.

  • Set up execution timing and trigger conditions for alerts.

  • Customize alert messages using templates.

  • Share, duplicate, and delete rules effectively.

What are Rules in Analytics?

Rules define the conditions under which an alert should be triggered. Each rule evaluates incoming data and categorizes the results based on condition states (such as OK, Warning, or Critical).

You can assign severities to alerts, including:

  • Info

  • Warning

  • Critical

  • Custom-defined levels (tailored to your organization’s needs)

To prevent excessive notifications, alerts are governed by an Alert Generation Policy, which determines how and when alerts are triggered based on persistent or repeated breaches.

Enabling Rules and Setting Execution Time

Before creating your first rule, you’ll need to enable the Rules feature and define the execution schedule.
Follow this guide to enable rules and set the executio time:  https://optimizely.navattic.com/85h0m0u.

Creating a Rule

Once enabled, you can create rules that monitor key metrics or conditions in your datasets.

Customizing Alerts with Templates

Analytics provides a flexible Alert Template editor that lets you personalize the content and appearance of alerts—both in-platform and in push notifications.

Here’s what you can include in the template:

  • %Property: Metadata like rule name, status, or timestamp.

  • Line Breaks: For clearer formatting and readability.

  • Text: Custom hardcoded strings that explain the alert.

What is the Alert Inbox?

The Alert Inbox centralizes and organizes the alerts triggered by your enabled rules when specific conditions are met. Each alert entry helps you quickly assess the situation and take action, all from a single location.

Alerts in the inbox are displayed based on the time ranges configured in the rule and include the following details:

  • Rule that triggered the alert

  • Alert status (e.g., Open, Resolved)

  • Alert severity (e.g., High, Medium, Low)

  • Time the alert was triggered

  • Subject line, configurable in the Alert Template tab of the rule setup

Filter Alerts

As the volume of alerts increases, it becomes important to focus on the ones that matter most. Use filters to narrow down alerts by criteria such as rule name, severity, or status.

View and Take Action on Alert Details

Each alert has a detailed view where you can perform additional actions to manage the incident. On the Alert Detail page, you can:

  • Assign the alert to a team member

  • Update the status of the alert

  • Review associated rule logic and event timelines

This collaborative workspace ensures quick resolution and accountability. See a demo on Alert Details Page's additional actions: https://optimizely.navattic.com/ajt02ww
