How do I benefit from using customer segments?

Here's how Customer segments feature benefit different roles:

  • Marketer: The best way to reach your customers is to provide content that is specifically tailored for the right people at the right time. Separating your customers by region, size, industry, or any number of other ways allows you to target CMS widgets to specific types of customers, offer promotions only to certain regions or even prevent customers from seeing certain information until they log in to your site. Customer segments are a great way to ensure you're delivering the right amount of content to just the right audience.
  • Researcher/ Buyer: Your customers can get overwhelmed sorting through websites with too much content or information that isn't applicable to them. Eventually, your customers will go elsewhere to find an experience that's more targeted to their needs. Keep your customers on your site by segmenting them into groups and serving them only the content they need when they want it.

Customer segments

Customer Segments are rule-based groups of customers and/or users that enable businesses to personalize their online experience. These segments help dynamically customize website content, optimize product recommendations, and highlight relevant products for different user groups. Users can belong to multiple segments at once, with their assigned segments influencing the content and product suggestions they receive.

To activate custom er segment-specific content, the Has Customer Segment Specific Content option on a website's default language must be toggled to YES.

Create a new Customer segment

The New Customer Segment wizard helps users create customer segments by defining rules and determining whether products should be boosted for matching users.

Multiple segments

If a user meets the rules for multiple customer segments, the process is as follows:

  1. User accesses website.
  2. User is evaluated and found as a match for multiple customer segments (B, C, and D).
  3. The first widget on the webpage is evaluated. The widget looks at segment A, which has the lowest sequence number of all segments. As the user is not a match for segment A, the widget looks at segment B. The user is a match for segment B, but segment B does not have segment-specific content. The segment with the next-lowest sequence number is segment C. The user is a match for segment C, and segment C has segment-specific content, so that content is displayed for the user.
  4. Each subsequent widget on the page repeats step 3.

Select rule types to include in a customer segment rule

Customer segments are created by defining specific user and customer characteristics that form the basis of segmentation rules. These characteristics are selected from predefined groups, such as data fields on the Customer screen, or external factors like a shopper's location. The Rule Type dropdown in the Rules Tab categorizes these characteristics, ensuring that only relevant fields appear based on the selected rule type.
