Outline

In this module, you will build upon your understanding of the page tree structure in Optimizely CMS by learning how to effectively manage individual pages within that structure. You’ll explore how to copy, move, and remove pages while maintaining the integrity of your website’s navigation and internal links. This module will help you confidently organize your site’s hierarchy and ensure content remains accessible, accurate, and properly linked across all sections.

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • Understand how pages function as part of the overall site structure

  • Copy a page and its associated subpages, media files, and settings

  • Move a page safely using Cut, Paste, or Drag-and-drop

  • Identify how internal and external links behave when moving a page

  • Remove website content using the Move to Trash option and restore deleted pages when needed

Work with page tree structure

The structure of your website is made up of pages. By default, the page structure is reflected in the navigation menus.

By hovering over a page in the tree structure, information about the page appears, such as ID and page type. A set of page tree symbols provides additional information about the structure. Note that some of these icons are only displayed for the first draft version of a page, before any published version exists.

Managing Pages in Optimizely CMS

A page typically refers to a single, discrete unit of content displayed on a website. It is a core building block that users can create, edit, publish, and organize within the content tree.

Copying a Page

To copy a page:

  1. Select Copy from the three dot More icon of the page you want to duplicate.

  2. Navigate to the destination page and select Paste.

When you copy a page:

  • All subpages and associated media files in local folders are copied as well.

  • Links are automatically updated to point to the new copy.

  • Dynamic properties and categories are also duplicated.

If you paste the copied page under the same parent page, the Name in URL will include a number (e.g.,“page-1”). You should update the URL name afterward for clarity.

Moving a Page

You can move a page by using Cut and Paste from the three-dot More icon or by dragging and dropping the page to a new location.

Important considerations:

  • Internal links are automatically redirected and remain intact.

  • External links (from other websites or search engines) will be broken after the move.

Because of this, always consult your site administrator before moving a published page. However, if a page has never been published, it can be moved freely.

Removing Website Content

To delete content - select the item to remove and choose Move to Trash from the three dot More icon. Once moved to trash, the content is automatically unpublished. You can restore the page from trash if needed.

Trash

You’ll receive a notification if the content you’re deleting is linked from other pages, as removal could lead to broken links.

Note: Deleting a page will also remove all its underlying subpages.
