Assets Gadget
Outline
In this module, you will learn about the Assets Gadget in Optimizely CMS. The Assets Gadget acts as a central hub for managing multiple types of content and settings. Instead of navigating across separate gadgets for products, blocks, media, or forms, the Assets Gadget consolidates them into a single, streamlined workspace. This makes it an essential tool for content editors, marketers, and administrators alike.
After completing this module, you should be able to:
- Navigate the Assets Gadget and its different areas.
- Manage products, campaigns, blocks, and media from a unified interface.
- Work with forms and categories within the gadget.
- Adjust site settings directly in the CMS (with developer support).
- Understand when to use the Assets Gadget versus individual gadgets.
Catalog & Campaigns
If your CMS includes the Commerce Cloud platform, the Assets Gadget will host:
- Catalog structure – giving you access to all products created in your website’s catalog. You can open product pages, edit existing ones, or add new products.
- Campaigns – any active campaigns such as discounts or coupons (e.g., “$10 off shipping”) can be viewed and managed directly here.
Blocks & Media
The Assets Gadget houses:
- Blocks – all reusable content blocks created for your site.
- Media – images, videos, and documents uploaded for use across your website.
- These share a folder structure, making organization consistent. While Blocks and Media can be added as separate gadgets, most users rely on their presence in the Assets Gadget.
Forms & Categories
- Forms: Like the standalone Forms Gadget, you can access and manage all created forms here. Typically, form elements are managed from the Assets Gadget.
- Categories: Categories can also be managed within the Assets Gadget, though there is the option to use a standalone gadget if desired.
Comments & Site Settings
- Comments: These can also appear under the Assets Gadget.
- Site Settings: While not available as a separate gadget, developers can configure site settings to be accessible from the Assets Gadget. This allows editors to:
- Update layout settings (e.g., navigation menu).
- Change font styles
- Publish changes that instantly update the website without requiring developer intervention.
This makes Site Settings within the Assets Gadget especially powerful for quick adjustments to the website experience.
Best Practices
- Use the Assets Gadget as your central workspace—avoid duplicating gadgets unless you have a strong need for quick access.
- Work with your developer to configure Site Settings in the Assets Gadget, so you can make small design or layout changes independently.
- Regularly review media, blocks, and forms to ensure your content library remains up to date and relevant.
- Leverage the catalog and campaign tools if you are running a commerce-enabled site to keep products and promotions current.
