Outline

Welcome

In this module, you will learn about Objects & Fields in ODP, including how ODP's data structure informs its capabilities.

After completing this module, you should be able to:

  • Categorize business data using Objects & Fields
  • Map out the database structure of ODP

What is it? / Why use it?

Data is the foundation of Optimizely Data Platform and that data is built on Objects and Fields. With these two fundamental data types, ODP tracks all sorts of customer site-interactions, products, sales, orders, and various marketing campaigns.

Think of Objects as the different kinds of business data you want to track, and Fields as qualities or aspects of that data.

You can create custom fields to capture data that is not already provided in ODP's reserved list for each object. This is crucial for saving specific data directly to customer profiles, extending data retention beyond the standard 28-day period, and enabling personalized targeting. The new fields only capture data after you create them.

After you create a field or object, you cannot rename it. You can delete the custom field and add it again. However, you cannot delete fields that are currently being used in active campaigns, standard, or real-time audiences.
