Column Actor Dataset

Outline

In this module, you will learn how to create and configure a column actor dataset in Optimizely Analytics.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

Explain what a column actor dataset is and when to use one.

Create a column actor dataset inline and from the Datasets page.

Configure related datasets and optional cohorts.

Key concepts to know

Select a card to reveal the definition.

Two ways to create a column actor dataset

There are two ways to create a column actor dataset. Select a tab to see the steps for each.

Click + on the navigation panel and choose an exploration template. This option is available wherever an exploration asks you to select an actor.

Open the dropdown and, in the terminal selection, click Create Column Actor from an ID column.

Select the related dataset and columns, choose a destination folder, and click Save.

Configure your dataset

Select a topic to expand and read the details.

In the Related datasets tab, you define logical relationships between datasets, similar to joining tables in a warehouse. Click + Add Related Dataset, select the cardinality and dataset, then choose the columns that must match and click Save.

Analytics uses these relationships to decide which datasets to join and to show only relevant options.

An optional step where you define new derived columns and group rows into cohorts that represent logical groupings within your dataset.

When your configuration is complete, your column actor dataset appears on the Datasets page, ready to use like any other actor.

Video Walkthrough

Watch a column actor dataset come together, from creating it two ways to defining related datasets with the right cardinality.

Check your understanding

Answer the questions below to confirm what you have learned.

When would you create a column actor dataset?

A column actor dataset maps directly to a table in your data warehouse.

In the Related datasets tab, what does cardinality define?
