Navigation Gadget
Outline
In this module, you will explore the Navigation Gadget, one of the most essential tools in the Optimizely CMS editing interface. The Navigation Gadget provides access to your website’s structure, language versions, content tasks, and project items. Mastering this gadget will help you quickly locate, edit, and manage content while staying organized across multiple workflows and projects.
After completing this module, you should be able to:
- Understand the structure of the website within the Pages area
- Switch between different Sites and manage multilingual content
- Use the Tasks tab to review content statuses and workflow stages
- Work effectively with Project Items and avoid mixing unrelated content into projects
Pages Area
The Pages tab shows the entire structure of your website. At the top, you have the Root page, which always contains a Start page (Home page). Beneath it, the structure branches into all other website pages. From here, you can create new pages, navigate directly into pages for editing, or use the search function to locate a specific page.
Sites Tab
The Sites tab allows you to switch between different sites or language versions of your content. For example, if your site is set up in English and French, you can toggle between the two. When moving to another language version, you may be prompted to translate content or create new localized pages. Additional languages can be enabled through Settings.
Tasks Tab
The Tasks tab provides visibility into the status of your content. By default, it shows items in Draft mode, but you can also filter by statuses such as In Review, Ready to Publish, Recently Changed, Being Edited, or even A/B Test. This makes it easy to monitor where content is in its workflow without needing to open the Dashboard or Reports.
Project Items Tab
The Project Items tab shows content associated with active projects. This helps you track items linked to a project, whether they’re in draft, ready to publish, or already published. It’s important to switch out of a project context when making general updates. Otherwise, unrelated content may mistakenly be assigned to that project, cluttering it. Always verify whether you’re in a project-specific context (Spring/Summer Launch, for example) or working in None to avoid confusion.
